Whistle Britches: The Best There Is

November 9, 2016

Chef Omar Flores has done it again!  Although the location is not as ideal as his Casa Rubia in Trinity Groves, Whistle Britches is definitely worth the long trek to Addison.  Sissy's can step aside.  Whistle Britches has Sissy's beat in restaurant space and (more importantly) food - hands down.

The restaurant space itself can be transformed into the perfect indoor/outdoor combo thanks to a garage-door type wall that leads to a dog-friendly, expansive patio.

While the space is awesome, the main reason to come here is the fried chicken.  A little background:  Whistle Britches prides itself on everything being made from scratch - from the biscuits, to the chicken batter, to all 4 sauces offered.  The care and dedication shows immediately.

The chicken is marinated in pickle brine for a full 24 hours before being fried in a light, perfectly seasoned batter.  Couple the chicken with a made-from-scratch buttermilk biscuit and you'll never want for any competitor's southern fare again.

Whistle Britches' signature dish is (apropos) called "The Whistle Britches."  It's not just an ordinary chicken sandwich.  It's Chef Omar's southern heaven-in-your-mouth creation:  Fried chicken on a perfectly fluffy buttermilk biscuit with an ice cream scoop sized blob of honey butter and pepper jelly right on top of the chicken.  You likely won't be able to finish the whole thing, but you'll be tempted to.  It's one of the best fried chicken sandwiches you'll ever have.

If you're not hungry enough for a sandwich, another great option is the "Love Me Tender" plate.  This features 4 decent sized chicken tenders with a signature buttermilk biscuit and coleslaw on the side.  Chicken tenders usually tend to be dry, but these are the juiciest, most flavorful I've ever had.  You'd be just fine if you choose not to dunk the tenders in any sauce.  But if you choose to dip, the house-made gravy combined with the pepper sauce are a fantastic combo.  The coleslaw is unique because it has cilantro in it, which for some is great (like me).  But for others, it could taste soapy (depending on your cilantro meter).  A bit odd, but if you like cilantro you'll love this side.

Overall, the fried chicken here is amazing - some of the juiciest and most flavorful you'll ever have.  A strong contender for taking over Sissy's spot for Best Fried Chicken in Dallas.  Go, Omar, go!
